In Memoriam: David Lee “Dave” Nordlund (1933–2026)
It is with great sadness that KanREN acknowledges the passing of David Lee Nordlund, a visionary and early architect of high-speed connectivity throughout Kansas. Dave passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, at the age of 92.
Dave’s impact on technology and community in Kansas cannot be overstated. After a distinguished career — including service in telecommunications with the U.S. Army and work on early computer systems — he became Associate Director of the Kansas University Computer Center, where he served until his retirement in 1998.
During his tenure at KU, Dave was a key member of the team that helped establish KanREN, laying vital groundwork that enabled advanced networking and internet access across educational and research institutions throughout the state. His deep technical expertise and steadfast commitment helped shape the foundation of what KanREN is today.
